The Southern Cross Peregrine Project...
....a note of thanks
Acknowledgements:
This project is ultimately the result of studies that were completed by our
colleagues and friends long before now. I have always believed that it is
important to recognize mentors and acknowledge how important they are to us
all. We truly do stand on the shoulders of giants.
So we’d like to express our thanks to the following people for their
lifelong inspiration and complete dedication to the study and appreciation
of peregrines; Steve Herman, Clayton White, F. Prescott Ward, the
gentlemanly Bill Mattox, W. Grainger Hunt, Yossi Leshem, Tom Cade, Jim
Enderson, Carl Thelander , William Cochran, R. Wayne Nelson, and Rich Glinski.
In South America, this must also include Nancy Hilgert, Oscar Beingolea,
Christian Gonzalez and Guillermo Vasina.
Our work in Chile was made possible by Charif Tala of the Servicio Agrícola y Ganadero in Santiago. We thank him for his cooperation.
Without the incredible technology developed by Paul Howie and
Microwave Telemetry over the years, this study would clearly have been
impossible. Paul has also generously donated two transmitters to the
project. We are so happy that this stuff came along while we are still here
on the planet.
Several people have asked so I should say that Mark Prostor, Don McCall
and Pat Little put together our new, beautiful and functional
website.
Mike McGrady and Keith Bildstein of Hawk Mountain Sanctuary
clearly saw an opportunity in this project and kindly donated the two PTT
transmitters so we could all look into the little-known lives of migrant
tundra males.
One of the most wonderful parts of this story is the remarkable response we
got from our Falcon Research Group members who donated the funding for this
project. Several hundred individuals representing a cross
section of Americans from all walks of life (school teachers, welders,
salesmen, a bank manager, retirees, a museum display designer, a window
restoration expert, artists, physical therapists, electricians, college
professors, lawyers, moms, tour leaders, military officers, doctors,
musicians and many others) cared enough to make this whole thing happen.
Donations ranged in amount from $10.00 to $10,000 and each one of them
mattered to us.
To all of you we express our deepest thanks, not only for the donations, but
especially for your generous and adventurous spirits.
For Phase 2 (Southward Migration, Sept/Oct 2007):
The following individuals are funding the first-ever peregrine chase in
history from the Arctic to South America. They received our funding letter,
read it, clearly saw the possibilities, said "WOW!!" and sent in their
donations. We are deeply grateful for their support. These are truly the
people that are making it happen. Muchas gracias amigos.

I’d also like to acknowledge a little-known but very special group of
people, the men and women who have worked so hard trapping fall and spring
migrant peregrines at Padre Island over the last two decades. These include
Brian Latta, Greg Doney, Willard Heck, Mark Robertson, Randy Townsend,
Mike Yates, Ruth Much, Catherine Wightman, Nancy Clum, and especially the incredible Scott Francis,
who is an inspiration to us all. Tom Maechtle deserves tremendous
credit for successfully running one of the best peregrine projects on earth
and Bill Seegar steadfastly arranged the funding for this effort.
Al Ingram built the phai traps for the Southern Cross project and
Robert Maguire tied our dho-ghazza nets.
Finally, we end by balancing technology with art. The extraordinary work of
Hans Peeters graces this project by means of our wonderful logo of a
migrant tundra peregrine. We have placed it against a compass rose, a
centuries-old symbol of exploration and the quest for knowledge. Thanks
again Hans.
